Sydney Olympic held off a spirited second-half comeback from Marconi Stallions to claim a 3–2 victory in an entertaining Round 3 Australian Championship clash, with Michael Ruhs scoring twice in the opening 22 minutes to put the hosts in control.
Marconi started brightly, creating two quick opportunities inside the opening seven minutes, both of which required saves from Sydney goalkeeper Filip Kurto. There was also early off-the-ball drama, with Marconi’s Franco Maya Valiente involved in an altercation with Sydney’s Michael Ruhs.
Despite Marconi’s positive start, it was Sydney who struck first in the 14th minute. Kosta Petratos delivered a dangerous ball across the six-yard box, allowing Ruhs to arrive and turn home the opener with Olympic’s first shot of the game.
The goal settled the hosts, who began to enjoy more possession and looked comfortable on the ball. Marconi remained dangerous on the counter, however, splitting the Sydney backline with a quick attack, only for the resulting one-on-one effort to be kept out by Kurto.
Sydney doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute, with Ruhs finding the net for the second time. A neat passage of build-up play opened up the Marconi defence before the forward calmly slotted home to give Olympic a commanding 2–0 lead.
The hosts remained in control for the remainder of the first half, looking solid at both ends of the pitch as Marconi struggled to find a way back into the contest.
Sydney continued their attacking threat after the break, with Moudi Najjar firing a powerful effort narrowly past the post in the 48th minute. Marconi were handed an opportunity to respond shortly afterwards when Sydney gave the ball away cheaply, but the visitors failed to capitalise.
Substitute Stephan De Robillard made an immediate impact after entering the contest, producing a positive run in the 62nd minute to win a corner. The resulting set-piece caused chaos in the Sydney penalty area, with De Robillard getting the final touch to force the ball over the line and reduce the deficit to 2–1.
De Robillard continued to cause problems, with another dangerous delivery dealt with by the Olympic defence just two minutes later. However, Sydney quickly restored their two-goal advantage in the 67th minute when Aiden Mostofi delivered a cross that travelled all the way through and into the net, making it 3–1.
Marconi refused to give up and were handed a lifeline in the 87th minute when Ruhs was penalised for clipping an opponent inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot, and Marconi converted the penalty to bring the score back to 3–2.
Despite the late pressure, Sydney Olympic held firm through the closing stages to secure all three points. Ruhs' first-half double proved decisive, while Marconi's late fightback ultimately came too late to deny the hosts a valuable Round 3 victory.
Broadmeadow Magic hold off Adelaide City in five-goal thriller
Broadmeadow Magic have maintained their unbeaten start to the Australian Championship, surviving a late Adelaide City fightback to secure a 3-2 victory at Magic Park and remain top of Group B.
The hosts made a fast start, with Ezra Palombini opening the scoring in the 11th minute after Luis Lara Delgado’s delicate back heel set up the attack.
The Magic continued to dictate proceedings throughout the first half, with Delgado going close on multiple occasions, while Will Ingram also tested City goalkeeper John Hall. The Magic headed into the break firmly in control, having registered 10 shots to Adelaide's three, with the visitors yet to record an effort on target.
Adelaide showed greater attacking intent after the interval, with Noah James producing an important save to tip Daniel Bressan's effort onto the crossbar in the 47th minute.
The Magic eventually doubled their advantage in the 73rd minute, with Delgado getting on the scoresheet for his first Australian Championship goal, heading home Jarred Baker's corner at the far post.
Bailey Wells made it three just two minutes later, finishing a swift counter-attack with a composed strike into the bottom corner from outside the penalty area.
However, Adelaide refused to surrender, with City sub Francesco Schimizzi pulling one back in the 77th minute, before Bailey O'Neil capitalised on a goalmouth scramble to make it 3-2 just seven minutes later.
O'Neil had another opportunity to complete the comeback in the dying stages, but his effort was directed straight at James as Broadmeadow held on for the victory.
