South Melbourne claimed the bonus point after edging Sydney United 58 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a hard-fought 1–1 draw at Lakeside Stadium on Friday night.
One of the biggest and oldest rivalries in Australian football began with both sides looking to settle into the contest. South Melbourne enjoyed more of the early possession, with Aron Cocks providing a bright spark down the left flank. Cocks tested the Sydney goalkeeper with the first shot on target in the sixth minute before sending a dangerous ball across the six-yard box two minutes later, but nobody was on hand to turn it home.
Despite South Melbourne’s early initiative, neither side could find the composure required in the final third. Kosta Barbarouses came close to catching the Sydney goalkeeper off his line with an attempted lob, but the effort lacked the necessary height and was comfortably collected.

The breakthrough arrived in the 37th minute when a handball was given against South Melbourne defender Jacob Eliopoulos. Sydney United 58 made no mistake from the penalty spot, with Mason Wells converting to put the visitors ahead. South Melbourne responded immediately, forcing the Sydney defence and goalkeeper into action with a pair of dangerous crosses before the break.
The home side wasted little time after half-time in finding an equaliser. Sydney substitute Tomislav Ozanic brought down South Melbourne’s Yuki Uchida inside the penalty area, giving the hosts a spot-kick of their own. Jordan Swibel stepped up and converted in the 48th minute to bring the scores level at 1–1.
The equaliser opened up the contest, with the home crowd lifting South Melbourne’s energy as both teams searched for a winner. Sydney enjoyed a sustained spell of possession around the hour mark and created a couple of quick chances, but South Melbourne stood firm. At the other end, a long-range effort flashed narrowly past the post.
Sydney thought they had found a second goal in the 75th minute, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. Substitute Ali El-Sabeh then tested the South Melbourne goalkeeper with a powerful strike from outside the box, while South Melbourne’s David Yoo came close at the other end after pouncing on a loose clearance, his effort narrowly missing the target.
South Melbourne continued to push in the closing stages, with substitute Bul Juach firing wide after capitalising on a deflected pass in the 90th minute. Neither side could find a decisive breakthrough, sending the match to penalties to determine who would take home the bonus point.
The shootout delivered further drama. South Melbourne goalkeeper Javier Lopez saved Sydney’s opening penalty, giving the hosts an early opportunity, but the contest continued deep into sudden death. After a missed Sydney effort, South Melbourne held their nerve to convert the decisive kick and secure the bonus point.
After a contest in which both sides had their moments, South Melbourne’s resilience and composure from the spot proved decisive. The result gives them a valuable bonus point, while Sydney United 58 leave Lakeside Stadium with a share of the match points but without the shootout reward.

Wests APIA produced a dominant attacking display to defeat Adelaide City 3–1 at Adelaide City Park on Friday night, with goals from Fabian Monge, Jordan Segreto and substitute Taye Hedley securing the visitors a deserved victory.
The travelling side made an immediate statement, opening the scoring inside two minutes when Jack Stewart’s initial effort was blocked before the rebound fell kindly to Monge, who made no mistake from close range.
Wests APIA continued to threaten throughout the opening stages, with Segreto nearly doubling the advantage in the 23rd minute. His well-struck free kick from the edge of the area rattled the intersection of the crossbar and post.

The pressure continued as Wests APIA dominated the attacking exchanges, restricting Adelaide to limited opportunities in the opposition half. A long-range effort from Jordan Segreto and another strike from Edward Caspers tested the hosts’ resolve, while Adelaide’s best first-half chance came through a 35-yard free kick from Asad Kasumovic, which required an awkward save from the Wests goalkeeper.
The half-time statistics reflected Wests APIA’s superiority, with the visitors registering 11 shots to Adelaide’s three.
Adelaide emerged with greater intent after the break, briefly believing they had been handed a lifeline when Michael Kouta won a penalty in the 51st minute. However, after consulting his assistant, the referee overturned the decision, denying the hosts an opportunity to draw level.
Wests APIA capitalised on the reprieve 12 minutes later. Stewart worked his way into the penalty area before laying the ball off to Segreto, who finished confidently into the bottom-left corner to give the visitors a two-goal cushion.
Adelaide refused to surrender, however, and Asad Kasumovic sparked hopes of a comeback in the 72nd minute. The midfielder controlled a long ball superbly before smashing his finish past the Wests goalkeeper, cutting the deficit to 2–1 and injecting fresh life into the contest.
With the hosts pushing for a leveller, Wests APIA found the decisive breakthrough in the 86th minute. Substitute Taye Hedley combined neatly with Stewart in a slick one-two before calmly slotting the ball into the far-right corner, restoring Wests’ two-goal advantage and putting the result beyond doubt.
The final whistle confirmed a 3–1 victory for Wests APIA, whose clinical finishing and attacking pressure proved too much for Adelaide City. While Kasumovic’s strike offered the hosts a brief route back into the contest, Wests’ quality in the final third ultimately ensured they left Adelaide City Park with all three goals and the win.
