South Melbourne continued their Australian Championship campaign with a composed 2–0 victory over Canberra Croatia, with Jordan Swibel’s first-half finish opening the scoring before Thomas Giannakopoulos sealed the points in the second half.
South Melbourne started positively, enjoying the majority of possession in the opening stages, while Canberra were content to sit back and look for opportunities on the counter-attack. A couple of dangerous early crosses from Canberra were dealt with by the visitors, who began to build pressure through a series of corners.
Canberra goalkeeper Adrian-Jamie Bazina was forced to come off his line and punch clear from one particularly dangerous delivery, while further South Melbourne set-pieces kept the home defence on alert. Tony Spaseski produced a heavy challenge just outside the box in the 18th minute, giving the visitors another opportunity to threaten from a free-kick.
Despite South Melbourne’s early dominance, Canberra produced their first real chance in the 25th minute when Daniel Colbertaldo unleashed a powerful strike that was tipped over the bar.
The visitors made their pressure count two minutes later. Arran Cocks delivered an excellent ball over the top on the counter-attack, allowing Jordan Swibel to get in behind the Canberra defence and delicately dink the ball over Bazina to open the scoring.
Canberra thought they had found an equaliser in the 31st minute when a free-kick was headed home at the front post, but the goal was ruled out for offside. South Melbourne nearly doubled their lead before the break, with Cocks forcing a save from Bazina before Yuki Uchida narrowly missed the target from inside the box.

South Melbourne resumed after half-time with the same attacking intent. David Yoo went close to extending the lead in the 59th minute, but his header rattled the crossbar, keeping Canberra within reach of a comeback.
The visitors continued to create opportunities, with another effort on target in the 72nd minute before Jordan Lampard delivered a dangerous ball into the box two minutes later that was cleared just in time at the back post.
South Melbourne’s second goal finally arrived in the 75th minute. Lampard swung in an inviting corner, and Thomas Giannakopoulos rose at the near post to head home and give the visitors a commanding 2–0 advantage.
Canberra struggled to find a response as South Melbourne maintained control for the remainder of the contest. The visitors continued to threaten a third goal, with South Melbourne’s attacking pressure ensuring Canberra had little opportunity to mount a late comeback.
South Melbourne saw out the closing stages to secure a deserved 2–0 victory, with Swibel’s clinical finish and Giannakopoulos’ set-piece header proving decisive after a disciplined performance at both ends of the pitch.
