The inaugurual Australian Championship Group Stage reached its conclusion today, as the final three Quarter-Final places were snapped up by Wests APIA, MetroStars and NWS Spirit.
Sunday's Round 6 action provided goals galore - as has invariably been the case with the Australian Championship in its first-ever season - with drama on show from every corner of the competition.
Read on to find out how it all went down.
Broadmeadow Magic 2-4 Sydney Olympic
Sydney Olympic have finished their Australian Championship campaign strongly, earning a 4-2 victory over Broadmeadow Magic in an entertaining fixture in Northern New South Wales.
The away side didn’t need long to settle into the game, opening the scoring after just five minutes thanks to a superb direct free-kick from Ryan Feutz.
Inside 15 minutes, Feutz made it a quick-fire double in a blistering start to the match, converting calmly inside the box after Glorie Amanda won the ball in the attacking third.
Towards the end of the first half, Broadmeadow clawed a goal back, with James Cresnar stylishly converting a volley on the follow-up from a wide free-kick.
17 minutes into the second stanza, Olympic re-took their two-goal lead, with Ali Auglah confirming he would leave the Australian Championship having scored in all six games, after receiving a square ball from Amanda inside the box.
Broadmeadow clawed a goal back shortly after, with Aden Raferty tidily finding the near-bottom corner, but off the kick-off, Olympic promptly went down the other end and scored once more, with Adam Parkhouse netting in his final match for his beloved club.
South Hobart 2-2 Heidelberg United
South Hobart have finally picked up their first point of their Australian Championship campaign, shocking Heidelberg United with a strong performance at home.
The match began in competitive fashion, and, in the 24th minute, South Hobart surprised one of the favourites of the competition, opening the scoring for the first time in the competition in front of a jubilant home crowd.
After picking up the ball on the left flank, Rex Maddock saw an attempted through-ball roll into the back of the net in startling fashion, with a miscommunication in Heidelberg’s defence seeing goalkeeper Ryan Govan miss the ball.
However, in the second half, Heidelberg began to stamp their authority on the match, beginning with an equaliser after just five minutes, courtesy of an Apostolopoulos header off a Chok Dau corner.
Just four minutes later, Dau added a goal to his assist, putting Heidelberg ahead with a brilliant dribble and finish that started 35 metres from goal, on the left flank, and ended just outside the box.
But the hosts held their nerve against the Victorian heavyweights, and equalised off a strong high press as Nicholas Morton converted from close range after being found by Tobias Herweynen.
And South Hobart finished the match with plenty of intensity, earning their first point of their Australian Championship campaign at their last opportunity.
MetroStars 2-0 Sydney United 58
MetroStars have progressed to the Quarter-Finals of the Australian Championship with a 2-0 win over Sydney United 58 at TK Shutter Reserve.
The home side found the goal they desired after just seven minutes, as they caught out Sydney United 58 with a high press.
After intercepting a pass from Josip Orlovic, Fabian Barbiero remained remarkably calm inside the box, sliding the ball to Michael Cittadini, who finished with aplomb.
The sides traded chances throughout the remainder of the first half, with both teams unlucky not to find the net at TK Shutter Reserve.
Coming into the second half, that trend followed, with Sydney United missing a major chance in the 65th minute as Cody Oestreich kept his team's hopes of a Quarter-Finals spot alive after preventing a stinging Michael Krslovic strike.
While looking nervous at times without the ball, MetroStars were remaining characteristically strong with it, and, with five minutes to go, won a penalty through some brilliant skill by Thomas Visser.
Hamish Gow stepped up and converted the penalty with aplomb - a goal which would ultimately secure their spot in the Quarter-Finals, after results went their way later in the day.
Canberra Croatia 0-1 NWS Spirit
The NSW Premiers arrived in the nation's capital in need of a win to progress into the Quarter-Finals of the Australian Championship.
Croatia, meanwhile, needed a heavy victory for a dramatic late finals push - which they left until the final day.
Jackson Brown pounced off a costly Canberra Croatia mistake in the hosts' own penalty area, which put the visitors in front after 23 minutes of football.
In a tense encounter, with both teams battling for a much-coveted Quarter-Finals spot, no further goals came.
Spirit went on to keep a clean sheet, winning 1-0 away from home to leapfrog Preston Lions into second in Group C, to progress to the final eight.
Wests APIA FC 4-1 Bayswater City
Apia broke the deadlock as Franco Farinella tapped home a cross from Presley Ortiz from within the six-yard box.
Farinella wasn’t done there, finishing with composure on the cusp of the break to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
Things went from bad to worse for Bayswater City following the dismissal of Scottish midfielder Sean McManus.
However, this didn’t deter the visitors from getting themselves back on the comeback trail.
Aidan Edwards dinked the ball over the top of Wests APIA goalkeeper Oliver Kalac, who wasn’t able to punch the ball away to safety.
The hosts responded accordingly.
Oscar Gonzalez, upon his senior debut, found the net to round off an impressive 4–1 win for Apia, leapfrogging them to first on the Group D ladder.
The result also assisted South Australian outfit MetroStars, who finished the group in second place - surpassing Bayswater City, who only required one point from two matches to ensure qualification into the final eight.
Upon the conclusion of today's action, the road to the inaugural Australian Championship Final was confirmed, with venues and kick-off times to be announced tomorrow.
