Preston Lions and Wollongong Wolves played out a goalless stalemate in their Australian Championship 2026 opener, with Wollongong claiming the bonus point after winning a penalty shootout 6-5 at the end of a contest that promised plenty but ultimately lacked a finishing touch.
Both sides had opportunities to take control of the match, with the woodwork and goalkeepers proving decisive in a game that grew increasingly tense as the minutes ticked away.
Wollongong made the brighter start in front of goal, striking the post in the eighth minute following a promising passage of build-up play. The visitors suffered an early setback soon after, however, with defender Dylan Ryan forced off injured in the 10th minute.
Preston responded with spells of pressure of their own. A penalty appeal was waved away in the sixth minute after a promising run from Cian Cuba, while Ayden Brice was booked for a push in the back as the contest began to heat up.
The Lions threatened from distance and set pieces, with a low free-kick causing problems for the Wollongong goalkeeper before being gathered at the second attempt. Another corner brought the woodwork into play, while a frantic spell midway through the half saw both sides produce dangerous attacks and goal-saving interventions.
Despite the chances, neither team could find the breakthrough before the interval. Preston finished the half on top, but a lack of precision in the final third continued to undermine their attacking efforts.
The hosts carried that momentum into the second period, forcing another strong save from the Wolves goalkeeper in the 55th minute. Wollongong had an opportunity of their own three minutes later, but a free header at the back post sailed over the crossbar.
Preston's triple substitution on the hour mark refreshed the frontline, yet the decisive goal remained elusive. Daniel Edwards came closest in the 71st minute, unleashing a superb volley from around 25 yards that narrowly missed the post.
Wollongong continued to threaten on the counter, with an attempted overhead kick flashing wide in the 77th minute. Preston enjoyed the better of the closing stages, but the final ball and finishing touch remained missing as the match drifted towards penalties.
The Wolves made a late goalkeeper change in stoppage time, seemingly preparing for the shootout, and the decision paid off as they emerged victorious to secure the bonus point.
For Preston, the performance offered plenty of encouragement in terms of pressure and chance creation, but their inability to convert those opportunities proved costly. Wollongong, meanwhile, leave with the extra point after surviving a difficult finish and keeping their composure when it mattered most.
