Report: Plenty of goals on Super Saturday as Marconi and Heidelberg seal big wins

There were big wins for two teams on Super Saturday in Round 2 of the 2025 Australian Championship as Group B opened up.

Marconi were comprehensive victors over South Hobart, and Heidelberg United battled to a solid win over Wollongong Wolves.

Marconi Stallions 4-0 South Hobart

The hosts took the lead 19 minutes in, courtesy of a well-worked move. Tyren Burnie delivered an accurate right-wing cross that bounced past Marko Jesic towards Damien Tsekenis, who steered in a first-time finish.

Marconi could have been two goals up just a couple of minutes later. The Stallions caught South Hobart trying to play out from the back, with Jesic firing an effort that South Hobart goalkeeper Nicholas O’Connell saved before Tsekenis blazed the follow-up over.

The chances kept coming for Marconi. Before the half-hour mark, Franco Maya’s free-kick sailed narrowly over the bar, and in the 39th minute, O’Connell produced a top save to deny James Bayliss.

South Hobart had a couple of bright moments in the first half, but Marconi held on to their slender lead heading into the break.

The Stallions doubled their lead soon after halftime as Tsekenis secured his brace, reacting fastest in the box to blast in a close-range finish.

Tsekenis made it a hat-trick just after the hour mark, receiving the ball in the right of the box and firing a shot home.

In the 73rd minute, Musashi Kokubo diverted the ball into his own net to round out a comfortable victory for the home side.

Despite chances falling both ways, the visitors went into the sheds ahead.

Just five minutes into the second half, Heidelberg doubled their advantage. Anthony Lesiotis with a controlled volley from the edge of the area that snuck under Wolves’ goalkeeper Daniel Solsky.

United remained solid at the back, keeping Wollongong pegged back and limiting their chances to get meaningful shots off.

A couple of minutes later, the side finished off the game, as Angus Taylor's shot from the edge of the box slipped through Solsky's fingers.
