Oakleigh Cannons Claim Historic Away Win to Boost Knockout Hopes

Oakleigh Cannons took a significant step towards qualification for the Australian Championship knockout stages with a professional 2–0 victory over Sydney Olympic at Sydney Olympic Athletics Centre.

Sydney started brightly, earning an early corner and enjoying more of the ball in the opening stages as they looked to build from the back. The hosts threatened in the 10th minute when Michael Ruhs headed wide from a Dimitrios Petratos delivery, before Dimitrios saw a deflected effort fly over the bar two minutes later after brother Kosta had found space down the left.

Luke Brattan also tested the Oakleigh goalkeeper from distance, while the visitors began to find their rhythm. Arion Sulemani fired narrowly wide in the 13th minute before opening the scoring five minutes later.

Oakleigh made the most of a quick transition down the right, with Joseph Guest teeing up Sulemani, who struck a powerful effort that went in off the crossbar to give the Cannons the lead.

The visitors looked dangerous on the counter, and Alex Salmon's snapshot in the 21st minute eventually fell to Lebib Lebib, whose effort was smothered by Filip Kurto. At the other end, Oakleigh goalkeeper Thomas Manos did well to palm away a lofted Dimitrios Petratos cross.

Sydney attempted to regain control as the half progressed. Lachlan Griffiths drove through a crowd of bodies before sending his effort wide, while a dangerous cross from Aiden Mostofi was bundled over the bar. Oakleigh nearly doubled their advantage before the break, with Salmon's volley clipping the post after an early cross from the right.

Seth Clark also fired wide on the volley from the edge of the area as Sydney went into the interval trailing 1–0.

The Cannons made the perfect start to the second half, doubling their advantage in the 50th minute. A counter-attack created the opportunity for Lebib, who kept his composure to finish calmly in a one-on-one situation and put Oakleigh firmly in control.

Sydney pushed to find a way back into the contest, but clear-cut chances proved difficult to come by. Dimitrios Petratos fired wide on the turn before Michael Ruhs tried his luck from distance, with little trouble for the Oakleigh defence.

As the hosts committed more players forward, gaps began to appear at the other end. Oakleigh had a penalty appeal turned down in the 85th minute, while substitute Adem Duratovic saw a late opportunity smothered by Kurto.

Oakleigh held firm through the closing stages to secure a memorable first away win in the Australian Championship. The result moves the Cannons a step closer to the knockout stages, while Sydney Olympic are left with their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
