MD3 Report: South Melbourne and Bayswater win as Magic claim bonus point

Reigning champions South Melbourne began their Australian Championship title defence with a narrow victory, Bayswater City maintained their perfect home record in the competition and Broadmeadow Magic claimed a penalty shootout bonus point in Saturday’s triple-header.

Yuki Uchida’s second-half strike secured a 1–0 win for South Melbourne at Sutherland Sharks, while Bayswater defeated Marconi Stallions 3–1 at Frank Drago Reserve. At Magic Park, Broadmeadow and Wests APIA played out a goalless draw before the hosts prevailed 4–3 in the shootout.

Sutherland Sharks 0–1 South Melbourne

Reigning Australian Championship winners South Melbourne have opened their 2026 campaign with a tight 1–0 victory over Sutherland Sharks at Seymour Shaw Stadium.

Both sides enjoyed opportunities in the first half, but neither could find the breakthrough before the interval.

South Melbourne came close to opening the scoring in the 20th minute when Brendan Gan produced a crucial goal-line clearance from Jordon Lampard’s corner, before James Lackay rattled the woodwork just three minutes later.

The Sharks responded with several promising opportunities of their own, with Lachlan Sattout threatening throughout the opening half. Their best chance came in the 36th minute when Sattout broke forward and delivered a dangerous ball across goal towards Diego Bonilla, only for Marco Jankovic to produce a vital last-ditch tackle.

South Melbourne made the perfect start to the second half, breaking the deadlock in the 46th minute when Yuki Uchida got the decisive touch to Arran Cocks’ dangerous free-kick delivery.

Sutherland pushed for an equaliser, with Sattout firing wide in the 57th minute before forcing Javier Lopez into an outstanding save from a header just three minutes later.

The hosts continued to threaten, with Alen Harbas twice testing Lopez before finding the back of the net in the 76th minute, only for the offside flag to deny the Sharks an equaliser.

Despite Sutherland’s late pressure, South Melbourne held firm to secure all three points and make a winning start to their Australian Championship title defence.

Broadmeadow Magic 0–0 Wests APIA

Broadmeadow Magic win penalty shootout 4–3 for bonus point

Broadmeadow Magic took home the bonus point in an all-New South Wales showdown after neither side could find the back of the net within the 90 minutes.

A cagey first 45 minutes saw both sides find themselves in promising positions but fail to make the most of their chances.

Wests APIA’s Jordan Segreto found himself in a promising position at the 18-minute mark as the ball fell to his feet on the edge of the 18-yard box, but his shot whistled just wide of the far right post.

Riley Smith and Bailey Wells combined nicely just before half-time to create space in Wests APIA’s box, but the volley by Wells was easily collected by Oliver Kalac in goal.

After creating space on the edge of the box with a sharp fake shot, Wests APIA’s Jack Stewart had his shot blocked and deflected narrowly wide of Noah James’s goal.

Both sides had claims for a penalty in the second half, but the referee quickly waved away the appeals.

With neither team able to break the deadlock by full-time, it came down to a shootout for the bonus point.

With Michael Konestabo denied by Noah James on Wests APIA’s first penalty and James Cresnar striking the post for Broadmeadow Magic, the shootout remained level after the opening spot kicks.

Noah James was the eventual hero for Broadmeadow Magic, saving Edward Caspers’ attempt, with Jakob Cresnar slotting home the decisive penalty to secure the extra point for the home side.

Bayswater City 3–1 Marconi Stallions

Bayswater City’s unbeaten home run in the Australian Championship continued as they took home all three points against Marconi Stallions at Frank Drago Reserve.

Marconi Stallions travelled to Western Australia hoping to spoil the occasion in their opening fixture of the Australian Championship against Bayswater City.

The home side were first to strike, however, through a clever free kick which saw Patrick Loughrey bend the ball around the wall and into the bottom corner.

The Stallions returned serve in the 32nd minute through a set piece of their own, as Damian Tsekenis headed home uncontested from a free kick.

All square after the first 45 minutes, both sides took some time feeling each other out to start the second half.

The deadlock was broken in the 61st minute as Chok Dau took down a wayward cross on the edge of the box and buried the ball in the top corner of Joel Wade’s goal.

Despite the best efforts of the visiting side, Cameron Teece secured the three points for Bayswater City with a cultured finish. A long ball from goalkeeper Lewis Italiano was flicked on
