Lions FC came from behind to secure their first win of the 2026 Australian Championship, scoring twice in the second half to defeat Preston Lions 2–1 in wet conditions at Luxury Paints Stadium.
Heavy rain left the Queensland pitch heavy underfoot, contributing to a scrappy opening as both sides struggled to find their rhythm. Preston looked nervy playing out from the back, repeatedly giving possession away in dangerous areas, but Lions FC were unable to make their early pressure count.
Lions FC started the brighter side, with Jerson Lagos emerging as the main attacking threat during the opening 15 minutes. Despite creating opportunities, their final-third play lacked precision, while Jonas Markovski sent a rare first-half chance over the bar.
Preston gradually found more patience in possession and threatened through a headed opportunity and a Nahuel Bonada effort from range that flashed narrowly wide. A penalty appeal was waved away after a heavy shoulder in the back, while Lions FC missed a chance of their own at the other end when Liam Ponting fired over despite a teammate being available in front of goal. The sides went into half-time goalless.
Preston made the breakthrough shortly after the restart. The visitors produced a brilliant spell of build-up play, finished calmly by substitute Luka Blazevic to put Preston ahead just four minutes into the second half.
Lions FC responded with renewed urgency and somehow failed to score during a pair of quick chances around the hour mark. Their pressure eventually told in the 73rd minute, when Jerson Lagos latched onto a long ball over the top, beat the last defender and cleverly lobbed the goalkeeper to level the scores at 1–1.
With momentum shifting, Lions continued to push forward and found the decisive goal in the 83rd minute. A free-kick from Lagos caused problems in the wet conditions, with the Preston goalkeeper spilling the ball and Shaun Carlos reacting quickest to tap home and complete the comeback.
Preston threw bodies forward late on, earning a corner in stoppage time with one final opportunity to rescue a point, but Lions held firm to see out the victory.
The result gives Lions FC their first win of the 2026 campaign after a determined second-half comeback, while Preston will be left to rue missed chances and the costly error that led to the winning goal.
