Canberra Croatia Claim Famous Derby Win Over Sydney United 58

3 min read

Canberra Croatia claimed a memorable 2–1 victory over fellow Croatian rivals Sydney United 58 at Deakin Stadium, scoring twice and holding firm through a tense finale despite being reduced to ten men.

Sydney United started brightly and created the first opportunity inside two minutes, with a move down the left ending in a shot on target that was comfortably dealt with by Canberra goalkeeper Finn Jurak.

However, it was Canberra who struck first in the fifth minute. After Sydney surrendered possession, Joshua Gaspari punished the visitors with an excellent strike from distance to put the hosts ahead.

Sydney responded positively to falling behind, enjoying a spell of possession and looking to build patiently. Mason Wells tried his luck from range before Carlos De Oliveira came close to finding an equaliser in the 18th minute, but his effort drifted narrowly wide.

Canberra survived a scare in the 27th minute when a defensive clearance was required after Jurak came to collect a ball he could not quite reach. At the other end, Diego Celis threatened from a free kick around 30 yards out, sending his effort just over the crossbar before coming close again from a corner.

The hosts looked dangerous on the counter, Sydney nearly found a way back into the contest just before half-time. Farah Koko broke beyond the last defender after getting on the end of a good ball forward, but a heavy touch allowed the goalkeeper to gather.

Koko made no mistake moments later. Finding space inside the penalty area in the 45th minute, the Sydney attacker produced a clever chipped finish over the goalkeeper to level the score at 1–1 heading into the break.

The second half remained closely contested, but Canberra regained the lead in the 59th minute. After Sydney had seen a penalty appeal waved away, the hosts quickly moved up the other end, where Daniel Colbertaldo finished to restore Canberra's advantage.

Sydney looked for another response, with Colbertaldo's namesake Carlos De Oliveira sending a long-range effort over the bar in the 62nd minute as the visitors searched for a route back into the game.

The contest took another turn in the 78th minute following a heavy challenge, with tempers flaring between the two sides. The incident resulted in a red card for Canberra substitute Diego De Oliveira, leaving the hosts to defend their lead with ten men.

Sydney had an opportunity to take advantage of their numerical superiority in the 82nd minute but could not convert. Canberra then threatened at the other end, before Jurak produced a superb save to preserve the hosts' advantage.

The Canberra goalkeeper was called upon again in stoppage time, making two more important saves in quick succession as Sydney threw everything forward in search of an equaliser.

But Canberra held on to secure a famous 2–1 victory over their rivals, showing resilience and determination to take all three points.
