Broadmeadow Magic snatch late winner to defeat Avondale
Broadmeadow Magic claimed a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Avondale FC after a late goal settled an entertaining contest at Avenger Park on Saturday afternoon.
Avondale made a flying start, forcing Broadmeadow goalkeeper Noah James into a double save inside the opening minute. The resulting corner also presented a chance for the hosts, but a foul on the goalkeeper brought the attack to an end. Broadmeadow quickly turned the game around, winning a penalty in the second minute after a reckless challenge from Avondale’s Blake Carpenter. Jarred Baker stepped up and converted to give the visitors an early 1–0 lead.
Despite the fast start from Avondale, Broadmeadow took control during the opening stages. The hosts gradually grew into the contest, however, and found their equaliser in the 19th minute. A superb cross from the right wing found Niyah Joseph, who rose unmarked to head home and bring Avondale level at 1–1.
Avondale enjoyed the better of the remainder of the first half, creating several opportunities to take the lead. James produced a series of impressive saves, while desperate defending from Broadmeadow kept the hosts at bay. Avondale thought they had found a breakthrough just before half-time, but Kristian Trajceski’s effort was ruled out for offside.
The second half began with both sides sharing possession without seriously troubling either goalkeeper. Broadmeadow came close to regaining the lead in the 56th minute when James Cresnar found space inside the penalty area, turned and struck a shot that hit the inside of the post before staying out.
Avondale’s Jacob Muir was booked two minutes later for a foul on the edge of the penalty area, but Baker sent the resulting free-kick over the bar. Broadmeadow continued to threaten on the counterattack, particularly down the right flank, while Avondale introduced Saad Moukachar and Maxx Green in an attempt to find a way through.
The hosts piled on the pressure around the 67th minute, only for James to produce another outstanding double save to preserve the scoreline. Avondale continued to search for a winner, sending a dangerous ball across the face of goal in the 76th minute, but nobody could apply the finishing touch.
With the game appearing finely balanced, Broadmeadow struck the decisive blow in the 79th minute. An Avondale error gifted possession to the visitors, and Jarred Baker finished clinically to put Magic ahead 2–1.
Avondale pushed forward in search of a late equaliser, but Broadmeadow held firm through the closing stages to secure all three points.
After weathering sustained pressure and relying on some outstanding goalkeeping, Broadmeadow Magic leave Avenger Park with a valuable victory. Avondale will be left frustrated after creating plenty of chances, but their inability to convert that pressure proved costly as Baker’s late strike settled the contest.
Marconi prevail in 20-penalty shootout thriller against Oakleigh
Marconi Stallions claimed the bonus point after an extraordinary 20-penalty shootout against Oakleigh Cannons, with Cameron Windust holding his nerve to seal victory after a tense goalless draw.
The opening exchanges offered little to separate the sides, with Marconi firing two long-range efforts during the first 10 minutes. Their first significant opportunity arrived in the 12th minute when a ball over the top led to a cross from the right, but the hosts could not make the most of the opening.
Alex Salmon looked set to break through one-on-one in the 17th minute, only for the attack to be halted by a handball decision near halfway. Marconi continued to threaten, with Marko Jesic heading wide from a delightful trivela cross in the 24th minute. At the other end, much of Oakleigh’s attacking play flowed through Joseph Guest, the three-time NPL Victoria Player of the Year.
Marconi appealed for a penalty in the 38th minute after claiming Damian Tsekenis had been held back while chasing a long ball over the top, but no spot-kick was awarded. Anton Mlinaric then saw a shot from the edge of the area blocked and lifted over the bar, before scrambling a driven cross behind for a corner shortly before half-time.
Oakleigh began the second half with Guest firing over from distance after the ball broke kindly to him on the edge of the box. Marconi responded through Mitchell Glasson, who became increasingly influential after the break. After a penalty appeal came to nothing in the 52nd minute, Glasson bent a shot narrowly around the post two minutes later, bringing the closest chance either side had seen to that point.
Guest tested the Marconi goalkeeper again in the 72nd minute, forcing a safe parry with a left-footed effort from the corner of the box. Marconi continued to push, with Ahmad Elhelou firing over after the ball fell invitingly from a corner on his birthday.
The hosts had a golden opportunity to win it in the 89th minute when Stephan De Robillard broke through with the goal at his mercy, but dragged his shot wide. Substitute Noah Anderson then forced a corner with a late effort at the goalkeeper as Marconi searched desperately for a breakthrough. Neither side could find the decisive goal, sending the contest to penalties.
The shootout quickly became a test of nerve. Both teams converted their opening attempts, with Brodie Boyce and Elhelou among the early scorers, before Oakleigh goalkeeper Lachlan Charles produced a superb one-handed save to deny Quinten Blair. Charles then saved again to stop James Georgiou, while Marconi goalkeeper Joel Wade kept his side alive by saving Lebib Lebib’s effort on the line.
With the shootout moving into sudden death, both sides continued to find the net. Kaidyn Wright, Tyson Martin, Tyren Burnie, Mark Leonard, Noah Anderson and Anton Mlinaric were among those to score as the pressure mounted. Oakleigh’s Campbell Strong then saw his penalty saved, giving Marconi match point.
Cameron Windust stepped forward and powered home the decisive kick, sparking celebrations as Marconi won the shootout after 20 penalties and secured the bonus point.
After 90 minutes of disciplined defending and missed opportunities, the contest was ultimately decided from the spot. Marconi’s persistence paid off, while Charles’ crucial saves and Windust’s winning penalty proved decisive in a dramatic finish.
Sutherland Sharks strike early to secure Canberra victory
Sutherland Sharks made the perfect start at Deakin Stadium, scoring inside the opening minute before a second-half penalty secured a 2–0 victory over Canberra Croatia in Round 2 of the Australian Championship.
The Sharks capitalised on a loose pass from Canberra almost immediately, with Jyden Harb producing a brilliant run into the box before finishing superbly to put the visitors ahead at 1–0.
After the early breakthrough, clear-cut opportunities were limited as both sides settled into a tactical contest. The first half developed into a chess-like battle, with neither team able to create much in front of goal.
Sutherland threatened to double their advantage just before the interval, with a dangerous ball flashing across the face of goal. The visitors continued on the front foot after the restart, creating another opportunity in the 47th minute when a header looked destined for the net, only for a Sutherland player to inadvertently clear the ball off the line.
Canberra began to find more joy as the match progressed, creating two promising chances around the hour mark and enjoying more possession in the final third as they searched for an equaliser.
However, the Sharks dealt a decisive blow in the 68th minute when they were awarded a penalty following a strong challenge inside the box. Lachlan Sattout stepped up from the spot and converted to extend the visitors’ lead to 2–0.
Canberra continued to push for a way back into the contest, but Sutherland goalkeeper Samuel Smith was finally called into action in the 90th minute, making his first save of the afternoon to deny a curling effort and preserve his clean sheet.
The early strike from Harb laid the foundation for a disciplined Sharks performance, while Sattout’s penalty ensured the visitors left Deakin Stadium with all three points after a composed 2–0 win.
