Jackson’s first-half double inspires Bayswater City win
Bayswater City produced a disciplined away performance to defeat Sydney Olympic 2–1, with Chris Jackson scoring twice in the first half before Moudi Najjar’s late strike gave the hosts a glimmer of hope.
Sydney started by giving the ball away cheaply inside the opening minute, allowing Bayswater to settle into possession. However, the home side created the first opportunity just moments later, with a long ball over the top leading to a quick shot.
After absorbing early pressure, Bayswater began to find their rhythm. Sydney forced a save from Lewis Italiano in the 11th minute, but the visitors took the lead four minutes later. A long ball forward was flicked on by the front line, allowing Jackson to get the better of the last defender before calmly slotting home.
Jackson almost doubled his tally in the 19th minute when a pass from Cameron Teece found him in space, but his effort narrowly missed the target. Bayswater grew in confidence following the opener and began to control more of the ball.
The visitors extended their advantage in the 32nd minute when Jackson rose at the front post to head home from a corner. He nearly completed his hat-trick just four minutes later, but the opportunity went begging as Bayswater continued to dominate the closing stages of the first half.
Sydney emerged from the break with greater intent, enjoying more possession and looking to find a route back into the contest. Four consecutive corners in the 56th minute created pressure, although the resulting header drifted into the side netting.
Dimitrios Petratos came close to pulling one back in the 60th minute with a shot from just outside the penalty area, Sydney’s closest opportunity of the afternoon to that point.
As the second half progressed, Olympic continued to push forward, but Bayswater remained organised defensively. With the hosts committing more players into attack, the visitors dropped deep and absorbed the pressure. Petratos tried his luck again from distance in the 79th minute, firing over, before Bayswater made a double substitution that included the withdrawal of Jackson.
Bayswater were content to retain possession rather than chase a third goal, while Sydney searched desperately for a breakthrough. A long-range effort from substitute Kaan Nizam in the 88th minute forced Italiano into an impressive save, keeping the visitors’ two-goal cushion intact.
Seven minutes of added time gave Sydney one final opportunity to mount a comeback. A dangerous free-kick came to nothing, and Bayswater continued to hold firm despite sustained late pressure.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 96th minute when Najjar produced a superb finish for Sydney Olympic. However, it proved too late to change the outcome, as Bayswater held on for a hard-fought 2–1 victory built on Jackson’s decisive first-half double and a resilient defensive display. Claiming their first-ever away victory in the competition.
Wollongong Wolves Go Top of Group D with Clinical 2–0 Win Over South Hobart
Wollongong Wolves have moved to the top of Group D in the Australian Championship after securing a convincing victory over South Hobart, producing a clinical first-half performance to take out the contest 2-nil.
The Wolves started brightly, with Nick Olsen forcing a strong save from South Hobart’s Luca Fragasso in the ninth minute, while Alex Masciovecchio repeatedly threatened down the left flank.
South Hobart had opportunities of their own, with Jesse Spang firing into the side netting after capitalising on some untidy Wolves defending, before Olsen went close again at the other end with an effort that was also just off-target.
Wollongong broke the deadlock in the 31st minute when Masciovecchio found the back of the net, meeting Olsen's cross with a well-timed unmarked run into the area to head home which was met with an acrobatic backflip celebration.
The hosts doubled their advantage just three minutes later, with Flynn Madden finishing superbly into the top corner after a short corner routine to give Wolves a commanding half-time lead.
Fragasso kept his side in the contest after the interval, producing a terrific one-handed save to deny Marcus Beattie before racing off his line to thwart Sebastian Duarte.
Wollongong threatened to extend their lead, with captain Lachie Scott narrowly missing a spectacular volley and Sebastian Hernandez firing wide from close range late in the contest.
South Hobart pushed until the final whistle, their best chance coming in stoppage time when Harrison Oates' close-range header was fired straight at Lucas Sinnott, who preserved Wolves' clean sheet.
The result puts Wollongong atop Group D after the opening two matchdays, while the Tasmanian side have now dropped outside of the top two following Lions FC’s victory over Preston Lions on Thursday night.
