After a second round featuring late winners, comeback victories and penalty shootout drama, the Australian Championship heads into Round 3 with the group standings starting to take shape.
With the group stage reaching its halfway point, historic rivalries and top-of-the-table clashes headline another weekend of Australian Championship football. Here's what's coming up in Round 3.
Round 3 at a glance
Canberra Croatia v South Melbourne

Kick-off: 7:30 pm (AEDT)
Venue: Deakin Stadium
Canberra Croatia face a tough test on Thursday night as they welcome an unbeaten South Melbourne side to Deakin Stadium for an intriguing Group A encounter.
The hosts have shown they can compete with strong opposition, pushing Sydney United 58 to penalties in their opening fixture. Canberra will be hoping to make the most of their opportunities as they search for a valuable result in front of their supporters.
South Melbourne arrives with plenty of quality across the pitch, including Aron Cocks, who caused problems down the left flank against Sydney United 58, and Jordan Swibel, who scored the equaliser in their 1-1 draw. The visitors went on to claim the bonus point in the subsequent shootout and will be keen to keep their unbeaten record intact.
Can Canberra rise to the challenge on Thursday night, or will South Melbourne continue their winning streak?
Sydney Olympic v Marconi Stallions
Date: Friday 30 October
Kick-off: 7:30 pm (AEDT)
Venue: Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre
Two historic New South Wales clubs renew their rivalry on Friday night as Sydney Olympic welcome Marconi Stallions to Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre.
Olympic will be determined to respond to their narrow 2-1 defeat to Bayswater City, with Moudi Najjar's late goal and Dimitrios Petratos' presence in attack offering encouragement heading into Friday's encounter. Finding a way through a disciplined Marconi defence will be central to their chances.
The Stallions held Oakleigh Cannons to a goalless draw before claiming the bonus point in a lengthy penalty shootout. Mitchell Glasson offered a threat going forward, while Marconi's defensive organisation could prove just as important against their NSW rivals.
Both clubs have an opportunity to gain ground in Group C as the competition reaches its halfway point, adding another layer to an already compelling rivalry.
Broadmeadow Magic v Adelaide City
Date: Friday 30 October
Kick-off: 7:30 pm (AEDT)
Venue: Magic Park
Broadmeadow Magic will be hoping to keep their unbeaten record intact when they welcome Adelaide City to Magic Park on Friday night.
The Newcastle side arrive after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Avondale FC, with Jarred Baker scoring twice, including a late winner, while goalkeeper Noah James delivered another cool, calm and collected performance. Magic have given their supporters plenty to celebrate so far, and another positive result would further strengthen their position in Group B.
Adelaide City face a different challenge after their 3-1 defeat to Wests APIA in Round 2. The visitors will need to be more disciplined defensively while making better use of their opportunities against a Broadmeadow outfit growing in confidence.
The two clubs meet for the first time in the Australian Championship, adding an extra element of intrigue to Friday's contest. Can Broadmeadow extend their unbeaten run, or will Adelaide produce a result on the road?
Sutherland Sharks v Sydney United 58
Date: Saturday 31 October
Kick-off: 3:00 pm (AEDT)
Venue: Seymour Shaw Park
A Sydney showdown awaits at Seymour Shaw Park on Saturday afternoon, as Sutherland Sharks look to build on their Round 2 victory when they host Sydney United 58 in a clash between two sides with plenty to prove.
Sutherland return home with renewed confidence after their 2-0 victory over Canberra Croatia, with Jyden Harb and Lachlan Sattout both getting on the scoresheet. The Sharks will be hoping that result provides a platform for another strong showing against a familiar Sydney opposition.
Sydney United 58 have proven difficult to overcome, most recently holding South Melbourne to a 1-1 draw before narrowly missing out on the bonus point in the subsequent penalty shootout. The reigning NPL New South Wales champions have the experience and quality to make Saturday's encounter a challenging one for the hosts.
Sutherland will be hoping to follow up last weekend's victory with another three points, but Sydney United 58 have every reason to fancy their chances the Saturday afternoon clash.
Wollongong Wolves v Lions FC
Date: Saturday 31 October
Kick-off: 3:00 pm (AEDT)
Venue: Macedonia Park
Group D leaders Wollongong Wolves will look to protect their position at the top when they welcome Lions FC to Macedonia Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves have yet to concede a goal in regulation time, with Alex Masciovecchio and Flynn Madden both scoring in last weekend's 2-0 victory over South Hobart. Their defensive record will face another challenge against a Lions FC side arriving on the back of a dramatic comeback victory.
The Queensland champions overturned a one-goal deficit to defeat Preston Lions 2-1, with Jerson Lagos and Shaun Carlos making the difference in front of goal. That result will give the visitors confidence as they prepare to take on the group leaders.
Wollongong's defensive strength meets a Lions FC side fresh from a confidence-boosting victory. Can the Wolves hold on to top spot, or will the visitors shake up Group D?
South Hobart v Preston Lions
Date: Saturday 31 October
Kick-off: 3:00 pm (AEDT)
Venue: South Hobart Oval
National football returns to South Hobart Oval on Saturday afternoon as South Hobart host Preston Lions in their first home fixture of this year's Australian Championship.
The Tasmanian side will be hoping to rediscover the form that earned them a 2-1 victory over Lions FC in Round 1. Goalkeeper Luca Fragasso could have another important role to play after an impressive individual display against Wollongong Wolves, while Jesse Spang will be looking to make his presence felt in attack following last weekend's 2-0 defeat.
Preston will be looking to make more of their attacking opportunities after a frustrating 2-1 defeat to Lions FC. Luka Blazevic provided a spark off the bench with a goal shortly after half-time, but two late goals denied the Victorian side the result they were chasing. They'll be determined to make their chances count against South Hobart on Saturday.
The occasion adds another dimension to an important Group D encounter. Can South Hobart celebrate their homecoming with a victory, or will Preston secure their first win of this year's Australian Championship?
Wests APIA v Avondale FC
Date: Sunday 1 November
Kick-off: 3:00 pm (AEDT)
Venue: Lambert Park
It's a historic occasion at Lambert Park on Sunday afternoon, with Wests APIA hosting a national league fixture at the ground for the first time since 1991 when Avondale FC come to town.
There's also unfinished business between these two clubs. Their last competitive meeting came in the 2025 Australia Cup Round of 16, when Avondale claimed a 3-1 victory to end APIA's cup run. The Sydney side now have an opportunity to turn the tables, arriving with confidence after an impressive 3-1 win over Adelaide City in Round 2.
Avondale, however, will have other ideas. The Victorian outfit created plenty of opportunities against Broadmeadow Magic last weekend, with Niyah Joseph drawing them level before Jarred Baker's late winner sealed a frustrating 2-1 defeat. A sharper performance in front of goal could make them a difficult opponent for the hosts.
The stage is set for another intriguing contest between these NSW and Victorian sides. Can Wests APIA get the better of their rivals this time around, or will Avondale come out on top once again?
Bayswater City v Oakleigh Cannons
Date: Sunday 1 November
Kick-off: 6:00 pm (AEDT) | 3.00 pm (AWST)
Venue: Frank Drago Reserve
Week three concludes with a clash of Group C's top two sides in what could be the match of the round, with Bayswater City chasing their third consecutive victory against a formidable Oakleigh Cannons outfit.
Bayswater are quickly establishing themselves as a team to watch in this year's Australian Championship, winning both of their opening fixtures. Chris Jackson has played a starring role, scoring twice in the first half against Sydney Olympic last weekend to secure a 2-1 victory on the road. Now back in front of their home supporters, Bayswater will be looking to tighten their grip on top spot in Group C.
Oakleigh have plenty to offer as they prepare to take on the group leaders. The Cannons put four goals past Sydney Olympic before being held to a goalless draw by Marconi Stallions in Round 2, with goalkeeper Lachlan Charles producing two important saves in a marathon penalty shootout. Although they missed out on the bonus point, Sunday's clash presents an opportunity to close the gap on Bayswater and put their own credentials to the test.
The top two teams in Group C have plenty to play for in Sunday's feature clash. Can Bayswater make it three wins from three, or will Oakleigh become the first side to defeat the Western Australian outfit?
